Drivers and Visitors
Delivery volunteers are the heart and soul of Meals on Wheels and touch lives with food and friendship.
Deliver a meal to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities in Lehigh County and brighten their days. Your smile may be the only one they see all day! Annually, our volunteers deliver almost 167,000 meals, drive a total of 158,000 miles and donate almost 43,000 39,000 hours.
Regularly Scheduled Volunteers
We need volunteers weekdays, from approximately 11:00 am - 1:00 pm You may volunteer once a week, once a month, or whenever your schedule permits. Delivery teams, consisting of a driver and visitor, deliver meals to between 8 and 16 people on each route. Our main pickup location is at Trinity Baptist Church, at 689 South Hillview Rd., Allentown (near Dorney Park). We also have a pickup site in Slatington at the American Legion, 510 Main St.
We provide orientation and training at convenient times as well as allow you to ride along with an experienced team to see how it’s done. Drivers must have a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance. You will also use your own car and gas to deliver meals.
Substitutes
This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for people who are unable to volunteer on a regular basis. Substitute drivers and visitors are needed to fill in on routes that are open due to volunteer cancellations. There’s no need to commit to a specific day; your name will be added to our substitute call list, and you will be contacted on an as-needed basis to see if you are available to substitute.
Snow Squad
These volunteers are called upon when weather conditions turn wintry and substitutes are needed.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Grocery Shoppers
We need volunteers to grocery shop for homebound seniors or adults with disabilities. Generally, our clients need a volunteer to shop for them once or twice a month. The hours are flexible based upon your and our client’s needs. This is very rewarding because our clients look forward to seeing you as much as they look forward to getting their groceries. Contact Lindsay Fly, Grocery Shopping Coordinator at 610-841-7132 or lfly@mealsonwheelslc.org for more information.
Office Support
Volunteers are needed to answer the phones, direct calls, provide information about our service, and perform general clerical duties in a small office environment. Our hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; help for a few hours one day a week.
We also have mailings and other projects that require volunteer help on as-needed basis.
Special Events
We need volunteers to help with various events throughout the year including fundraising events, community information sessions and health fairs. Times vary but may include evening and weekend hours.
