This month Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County celebrates its 47th year serving homebound seniors and adults with disabilities living in Lehigh County. In 1970, a group of concerned citizens learned about an elderly couple almost starving to death in their Allentown home because they couldn’t cook or shop and had no family to do this for them. This group vowed that this kind of situation would never happen again and founded our Agency after 9 months of planning.
On February 1, 1971 6 volunteers delivered meals to 9 seniors on 3 routes; today we serve up to 470 clients each weekday on 33 routes. Our recent survey shows that for 69% of our clients, our volunteer is the only person they see all day; for 36% the volunteer is the only person they see all week. Our service is much more than providing nutritious and medically tailored meals. The daily visit by a caring volunteer provides a social connection to avert loneliness and a check on the wellbeing of our clients. This visit is often the highlight of the day for our homebound.
Thank you to our founders as well as our volunteers, donors and other community supporters who ensure that we will continue to meet the need for home-delivered meals, wellbeing checks and friendly visits in 2018 and in the future.
